How do you get a second date during the holidays?
Ask within a day or two, offer up to three specific plans on different days that avoid the big holiday dates, and let them pick one instead of negotiating by text. In December a vague "let's do this again" tends to drift into January, so the fix is specificity, not more enthusiasm.
Specific beats keen. A day, a time and a place is the kindest thing you can send.
Who this guide is not for
- People still looking for someone to date. SecondYes is not a dating app: no profiles, no matching, no strangers, no feed. It is for people who have already met.
- Anyone unsure the first date went well. If they seemed lukewarm, a three-plan invitation can feel like pressure. A simple "thanks, I enjoyed that" leaves the door open without asking for anything.
- Long-term couples planning date night. The app does handle regular date nights, but the advice below is about the fragile stretch between date one and date two.
The holiday second-date calendar for 2026
We checked the dates for this season. The pattern is simple: the holidays themselves are hard, the days either side are easier.
| Window | What is going on | Second-date odds |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 16 to 24 | Normal weeks before Thanksgiving | Easiest. Ask now. |
| Nov 25 to 29 | Thanksgiving is Thursday Nov 26; many people travel | Hard. Plan for after. |
| Nov 30 to Dec 13 | Early December, office parties starting | Good. Weekend daytime works. |
| Dec 14 to 23 | Peak parties, shopping, travel | Tight. Short weeknight plans. |
| Dec 24 to Jan 1 | Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve both fall on a Thursday | Hardest. Avoid the holidays themselves. |
| Jan 2 to 10 | Everyone back, nothing booked | Good, if you already set it up. |

Asking for a second date in December: the 5-step visual guide
-
Ask the next day, while it is warm
Tawkify (updated 2025) puts it simply: do not leave them wondering, and aim for the second date within about a week. In holiday season that week fills up fast, so the next morning is a good time to send.

Pick a kind of date that fits the season
In Plan a Date you tap a few tiles: kind of date (coffee, dinner, drinks, walk, activity), mood, budget, area and when you are free. SecondYes suggests real nearby places from Apple Maps, and curated ideas are clearly labelled as ideas. Short and daytime beats long and late in December.

Offer three plans on three different days
Up to three complete plans travel in one link, each with a place, day, time and map. Spread them across the calendar above: one weekend daytime, one weeknight, one backup. They pick instead of negotiating by text.

Three plans, one invitation. -
Choose a vibe and send it yourself
Pick a Warm, Playful, Direct, Low-key or Sweet line, tap again for another, or write your own. You send the link through your usual messaging app. Your first name is the only personal detail that travels in the link.

They pick, you confirm, it goes in the calendar
Their answer comes back as a link in your chat. Open it, confirm, and the date becomes a keepsake ticket with Add to Calendar and directions. If plans need to move, offer the same places at fresh times.

Three plans on three different days quietly says "I want this to happen", without a single extra word.
A mini story: the Thanksgiving gap
They meet for drinks on Thursday, November 19. It goes well. On Friday morning, instead of "we should do this again", one of them sends three options: Saturday the 21st for brunch, Wednesday December 2 for a lights walk, Sunday December 6 for the winter market.
The reply comes Friday night. The 21st is out, a cousin's birthday, but December 2 works. It is confirmed and in both calendars before anyone gets on a plane for Thanksgiving. Nobody had to text "so... are we still on?" in the middle of the holidays.
An illustrative scenario we wrote, not a user story.
Honest limits
- Free has a ceiling. Your first invitations are free and replying is always free. Unlimited invitations, Ready 3, Instant 3, Calendar Fit (which suggests times you are free) and Plan Again are SecondYes Pro, monthly or yearly.
- The link is the invitation. Details travel inside the link you share, so anyone with it can open it. Send it only to the person you are inviting.
- No app can make someone say yes. SecondYes makes asking clear and easy to answer. "Not this time" is one of the buttons, on purpose.
- Apple devices only: iPhone and iPad, with widgets and Siri Shortcuts. The person you invite can reply from any browser.
One design decision we made
We put "not this time" right next to the yes. It would be easy to hide it and nudge more acceptances. But a second date that someone felt cornered into is worse than a clear no, and a polite exit makes the whole invitation feel safer to open.
Try it: what your invitation looks like
Swap in your own three windows from the calendar above, then send the real thing:
Second date · pick one
Sat 5 Dec, 11:00 AM · coffee + winter market
Wed 9 Dec, 6:30 PM · lights walk + hot chocolate
Sun 13 Dec, 3:30 PM · an hour at the ice rink
They can also ask for another time, or say not this time.
Second date holiday questions
Is it weird to ask for a second date during the holidays?
No. Calendars are fuller, so it helps to be more specific, not less. Offer a real day and time, keep it short, and give an easy way to say another time works better.
How soon after a first date should I ask for a second?
There is no fixed rule. The matchmaking service Tawkify (updated 2025) suggests showing interest early and aiming to have the second date within about a week. In December, a week can disappear fast, so ask within a day or two.
What is a good second date in December?
Something short, public and easy to leave on time: a coffee and a walk past holiday lights, a weekend market, an early drink before someone's office party. Save the long dinner for date three.
Should a second date be on a holiday itself?
Usually not. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve come loaded with family plans and expectations. The quieter weeknights and weekend mornings around them are easier yeses.
Do they need SecondYes to answer my invitation?
No. The invitation opens in an ordinary web browser. They can choose a plan, ask for another time, or say "not this time" without an app, an account or a paywall.
Is SecondYes free?
It is free to download, your first invitations are free, and replying is always free for the person you invite. SecondYes Pro (monthly or yearly) adds unlimited invitations, Ready 3, Instant 3, Calendar Fit, Plan Again, unlimited saved ideas and unlimited idea spins.
