Does writing a gratitude letter to yourself actually help?

Possibly, if you keep it specific and weekly, but be honest about the evidence: the research is mostly on gratitude letters to other people and on gratitude lists, not letters to yourself. What those studies do suggest is useful anyway. Once a week can beat daily, the lift fades unless you repeat it, and specific beats generic.

Gratitude works more like a weekly meal than a daily vitamin.

Gratitude letter questions

What is a gratitude letter to yourself?

A short letter thanking yourself for something specific you did: a hard call you made, a habit you kept, a kindness you showed. It borrows the gratitude-letter format, which research has mostly tested as a letter to another person.

How often should I write a gratitude letter?

Weekly is a sensible pace. In a study reported by the APA Monitor report on Sonja Lyubomirsky's study (2006), students who listed blessings once a week grew happier, while those who did it three times a week did not. The gratitude-letter boost in Seligman's 2005 study faded by six months, so repeating it helps.

Is it weird to thank yourself?

It can feel odd the first time. Write it the way you would thank a friend: name what you did, what it cost you, and what it made possible. The awkwardness usually goes after a paragraph.

What should I write in a gratitude letter to myself?

One specific thing you did, why it was hard, what it changed, and one line about who you want to be next week. Specific beats grand: "you called the plumber instead of ignoring the leak for another month" beats "you are amazing".

Can a gratitude letter help with depression?

This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician. Gratitude exercises are studied as well-being practices, not as treatments, and they are not a substitute for care.

The demo: a 5-week gratitude letter plan, Thanksgiving to New Year

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 in 2026. Here is one letter a week from that Sunday to the end of the year, each with a single prompt. Tap a week to see a sample opening line.

The last one is the trick: write it, then seal it for a year so it arrives next December. In Dear You that is a future letter; on paper it is an envelope with a date on it.

A mini story: the leftover-turkey letter

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, he sat down with cold turkey and his phone. His gratitude journal from January had stalled at day six. This time he wrote one letter, eight sentences, thanking himself for the week he finally booked the dentist after two years of avoiding it. It felt silly for a paragraph and then it didn't.

He did one each Sunday through December. The fifth he sealed for a year.

An illustrative scenario we wrote, not a user story.
