What is a letter to yourself after a breakup?
It is a private letter from you to a later you, written about the breakup and sealed until a chosen date, so you can be honest now and see how far you have come later. Unlike an unsent letter to your ex, it is addressed to the one person who will definitely read it.
Writing about hard experiences has been studied for decades; a 2005 review in Advances in Psychiatric Treatment summarises that expressive writing can help some people, while noting it does not suit everyone. And a 2009 study in The Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who wrote about the positive sides of a recent breakup for 15 to 30 minutes a day over three days reported more positive emotions, with no rise in negative ones, though that depended on how the breakup happened.

Six mistakes people make writing after a breakup (and the fix)
- Mistake: Writing to your ex.Fix: Open with "Dear me". A letter to them is a speech waiting for a reply. A letter to you needs none.
- Mistake: Only listing what they did wrong.Fix: Add what you got back: time, a friend, a hobby. The 2009 study above asked people to write about exactly that.
- Mistake: Writing it at 2am in one go.Fix: Three short sessions on three days. The calculator above dates them for you.
- Mistake: Rereading it every night.Fix: Seal it with a date. A month or a year from now, it reads like news from a braver friend.
- Mistake: Sending it "just to be honest".Fix: Keep it private. If you need to say something to them, write that separately, later.
- Mistake: Treating it as a cure.Fix: It is one small practice. If you can't eat, sleep or work for weeks, talk to your doctor or a therapist.
The fix is almost always the same: write to you, seal it, wait.
Inside Dear You

How to write a breakup letter to yourself in 3 steps
- Day one: what happened. Ten to fifteen minutes. Plain facts, then how it felt. No editing.
- Day two: what you got back. Time, friends, a version of you that had gone quiet. Small counts.
- Day three: a letter to later you. Three hopes and three questions. Seal it for a month or a year in Dear You, and close the app.
A mini story: the envelope in March
She wrote the first page on a Sunday in November, a week after it ended. The second day was harder: "what did I get back?" She wrote that she had her Saturdays again, and that she had started running with her old flatmate. On the third day she wrote to herself in a year and asked: "Are you still running? Did you go to Lisbon?"
She sealed it for a year and, separately, an Open When envelope called "when you want to text him". She opened that one twice in December. She did not text him either time.

Who Dear You is not for
- Anyone in crisis or thinking about harming themselves. Please contact local emergency services or a crisis line now. Dear You is not a mental-health service.
- People who want to talk it through with others. A friend, a support group or a therapist will do more than any app.
- Anyone who wants AI-written replies to their writing. Dear You's daily letters are original and chosen for your mood; your own letters stay your own words.
A design decision we made: nothing in Dear You resets. There are no streaks to break, so a week where you cannot face writing costs you nothing. After a breakup, the last thing you need is an app telling you that you failed.
Breakup letter questions
What should I write in a letter to myself after a breakup?
Write to yourself, not your ex. Say what happened in a few plain sentences, what you miss, what you do not miss, and at least one thing you have got back or learned. End with a question for the version of you who will read it in a month or a year.
Does writing about a breakup actually help?
There is some evidence. In a 2009 study, people who wrote about the positive aspects of a recent breakup for 15 to 30 minutes a day over three days reported more positive emotions, such as comfort and confidence, without more negative ones. It is one small study, and the effect depended on the circumstances of the breakup.
Should I send the letter to my ex?
Usually no. A letter written for yourself can be fully honest because nobody else reads it. If you do want to contact your ex, write that message separately, later, and with a cooler head.
When should I open a letter to myself after a breakup?
Pick a date far enough away that you will feel different: one month and one year both work well. Seal it so you are not tempted to reread it every night.
Can Dear You keep a letter sealed until a date?
Yes. A letter to future you can be sealed for a week, a month, a year, three years or five. It stays locked until its day, even from you. The free version holds one future letter waiting at a time; Dear You Plus allows unlimited.
Is Dear You a therapy app?
No. Dear You is a reflection and writing app, not a medical or mental-health service. If a breakup has left you struggling to cope day to day, talk to your doctor or a licensed therapist.
