How do you make up after a fight with your partner?

Most couples make up best by cooling down first, coming back at a time you both agree, each saying one clear thing about how it felt, and choosing one small next step together.

  1. Pause on purpose. Say you need a break and when you will come back. That feels very different from walking out.
  2. Settle your body. Slow breathing or a walk. Hard talks go better once neither of you is flooded.
  3. Own your part. One honest sentence about what you did beats a long defence of what they did.
  4. Say what you need, not what they are. "I need us to talk about money on Sundays" lands softer than "You never plan."
  5. Agree one small step. Later, check whether it helped.

Repair is not about who was right. It is about getting back on the same side.

What is UnFight?

UnFight is a private couples app that helps you pause during an argument, put what you mean into clearer words, and decide what to do next. You open it and answer one question: What would help right now?

From there you can take a quick or guided pause (or simple grounding if breathing exercises are not your thing), set a break timer for 5, 20 or 30 minutes, or use Say It Right. That covers nine situations, from apologizing and setting a boundary to saying thank you, and gives you an editable Brief, Gentle or Direct draft.

The RESET method, five stages with no countdown

For a conversation you want to work through, not just survive.

  1. R
RegulateFirst, an honest check: keep going now, take a break, write it down, not ready, or "I don't feel safe continuing".
  2. E
    ExplainYour side, in your words.
  3. S
    StateWhat you actually need.
  4. E
EstablishPick a next step: an agreement, a follow-up talk, a boundary, more time, professional support, or nothing further.
  5. T
TrackRevisit later with honest answers like "it partly helped" or "we need more time". No scores, no winners.

Skip any step, save a draft or stop at any point. If you choose "I don't feel safe continuing", the ordinary flow stops and the app shows safety resources instead.

One design decision we made

Drafts keep your meaning. When you ask Say It Right to soften a message, a boundary stays a boundary and an apology stays an apology. Kinder words should not turn into weaker ones.

Who UnFight is not for

An honest limit: UnFight is iPhone only, and Partner Mode means sharing one phone, not syncing two.

Questions couples ask first

How do you make up after a fight with your partner?

Most couples do best when they cool down first, come back at an agreed time, each say one clear thing about how it felt, and agree one small next step. A sincere apology for your own part helps more than winning the point.

Is UnFight free?

Calm Down, the break timer, safety resources, Say It Right in Brief, Gentle and Direct styles, your saved history and one guided session a week are free. Premium (monthly, annual or one-time lifetime) adds unlimited guided RESET and Partner sessions, the Detailed writing style, unlimited agreements with check-in history and summaries of topics that come up again.

Does my partner need the app too?

No. Most of UnFight works for one person. Partner Mode is optional: both people opt in and take turns on one phone, and nobody's answers are shown unless the person who wrote them says yes.

Does UnFight send messages for me?

Never. It can draft a message you may copy and send yourself, such as asking for a break. Nothing is sent for you, and nothing is saved unless you tap Save.

Is UnFight couples therapy?

No. It is a self-guided communication tool. It is not therapy, counseling, medical care, legal advice or emergency help, and it does not diagnose anyone or score your relationship. If you are in danger, call 911 or your local emergency number.

Where is what I write stored?

On your iPhone, not on our servers. There is no account and no analytics or advertising SDKs. You can add a Face ID lock and export or delete everything from Settings. Your iPhone's own backups may include app data.

Take the pause. Then talk.

Next time it gets heated, open UnFight.
