That does not make it fine. It explains why repeating your point louder rarely works, and why a short, timed break usually does more than another round.
The silence is usually a full tank, not an empty one.
Stonewalling myths vs facts
MythFact
He shuts down because he doesn't care.Withdrawal usually follows flooding. Julie Gottman says flooded people cannot hear or speak accurately, so silence is often a body hitting its limit.
Keep talking until it is solved. The Gottman Institute advises a break of at least twenty minutes, because the body needs about that long to calm down.
Only men stonewall. In the Gottmans' studies about 80 to 85 percent of stonewallers were men. That still leaves one in six or so who were women. It is a pattern, not a law.
A break means the topic is dropped.A break works when it has a return time. Julie Gottman suggests 20 to 30 minutes and never more than 24 hours.
Silence and the silent treatment are the same.Flooded withdrawal is not the same as silence used to punish or control. The second is a safety question, not a communication one.
The right app will fix him.No app fixes a person. A tool can help one of you pause on purpose and come back with clearer words. That is the whole job.
If you feel unsafe, this page and this app are not the right tool. Call 911 or your local emergency number, or a domestic violence hotline. UnFight lists safety resources, and choosing "I don't feel safe continuing" stops its ordinary flow and shows them.
A break is not a cure. If shutdowns happen most weeks, or a topic never gets picked back up, a licensed couples counselor is the better pick.
UnFight is iPhone only, English only, and Partner Mode means sharing one phone, not syncing two.
It is not therapy. UnFight is a self-guided communication tool. It does not diagnose anyone or score your relationship.
How to handle a husband who shuts down: the 3-step pause
Name the pause, not the person. "This is getting too much for both of us" lands very differently from "You always shut down." Say how long, and when you will come back.
Settle your own body for at least 20 minutes. Walk, slow your breathing, or do something dull with your hands. Do not rehearse your rebuttal; that keeps your heart rate up.
Come back to one sentence. Open with what you need, not what he did. One topic, one ask, one small next step you both agree to.
The pause has to be safe for both people. If he walks away without a return time, ask for one once, kindly, and then let the break happen.
A break with a return time is a promise. A break without one feels like abandonment.
What UnFight does in that moment
Take a break: 5, 20 or 30 minutes, custom, or no timer.
UnFight opens on one question: What would help right now? If the answer is space, Take a Break sets a timer and, if you choose, a private reminder. It also gives you an editable message you can send yourself: I want to continue this when I can give it my full attention. I'd like to take a break first. Nothing is ever sent for you.
If what you need is words, Say It Right covers nine situations, including needing a break, feeling misunderstood and raising a concern. Answer a few questions and you get a Brief, Gentle or Direct draft to copy, save, rewrite or discard.
A Tuesday, replayed
It starts with the dishwasher and becomes about everything. Her voice speeds up. His goes flat, then stops. Old script: she follows him down the hall asking why he won't answer, and he leaves the house.
New script: she opens UnFight, taps Take a moment, sets twenty minutes and sends her own version of the break message. He reads it and replies "ok, 9pm". At nine she has one sentence ready, drafted in Say It Right's Gentle style: "I'm not upset about the dishes, I'm upset that I feel like the only one keeping track." That is a talk they can actually have.

One design decision we made
We made the break message editable and never automatic. Software that texts your husband "I need space" on your behalf would be faster, and it would also be a small betrayal of the person reading it. You see every word, and you press send yourself.

Questions partners ask
Why does my husband shut down when we argue?
Often because he is flooded: his body has gone into fight, flight or freeze and he can no longer take in what is being said. Julie Gottman describes a heart rate over 100 beats a minute as a common sign. Shutting down is how many people try to stop an argument they cannot process in that moment.
Is stonewalling the same as the silent treatment?
Not always. Flooded withdrawal is a body that has hit its limit. A silent treatment used to punish, control or frighten someone is a different thing. If silence is part of a pattern that makes you feel afraid, contact a domestic violence hotline or call 911 or your local emergency number.
How long should a break from an argument last?
The Gottman Institute suggests at least twenty minutes, because the body needs about that long to settle. In a 2024 interview Julie Gottman put it at roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and no longer than 24 hours before you come back to the topic.
What do I say when he goes quiet?
Name the pause and the return, not his behaviour. Something like: "I can see this got too much. Let's take twenty minutes and come back at eight." Then actually come back. UnFight's break timer offers 5, 20 or 30 minutes, a custom time, or no timer.
Does my husband need to use UnFight too?
No. Most of UnFight works for one person on one phone. Partner Mode is optional: both people opt in, take turns on one iPhone, and nothing either of you writes is shown unless the person who wrote it says yes.
Is UnFight free?
Calm Down, the break timer, safety resources, Say It Right in Brief, Gentle and Direct styles, your saved history and one guided session a week are free. Premium (monthly, annual or one-time lifetime) adds unlimited guided RESET and Partner sessions, the Detailed style, unlimited agreements and summaries of topics that come up again.
Should we see a couples counselor instead?
If the shutdowns are frequent, getting worse, or you cannot get back to a topic at all, a licensed couples counselor is the better pick. UnFight is a self-guided communication tool, not therapy, and it does not diagnose anyone or score your relationship.
Next time the room goes quiet, pause on purpose.
