Where can you get free couples counseling near you?
Start with an Employee Assistance Program if either of you has one, then a university marriage and family therapy training clinic, then your local community health center; all three are free or priced by income. If none fits, Open Path Collective, a call to 211 and a free self-guided tool for the weeks in between cover most of the gap.
Search engines answer "near me" with a map of private practices at full fee. The cheaper routes rarely show up there, because they live inside employers, universities and federally funded clinics. Here are the six we would check, in order, with what each one actually costs.
The cheapest couples counseling is usually hidden behind an HR portal or a university website, not a map pin.
A worked result: what the finder shows
Say one partner works at a hospital with benefits, you live 40 minutes from a state university, and neither of you has insurance that covers therapy. The finder ranks it like this:
- EAP first. Free and confidential short-term counseling through the hospital job. Family problems are on the list of issues EAPs handle, according to the US Office of Personnel Management (2026). Search the benefits portal for "EAP" and ask whether they see couples together.
- University training clinic second. When the EAP sessions run out, a supervised training clinic is the next cheapest weekly option. The Michigan State University Couple and Family Therapy Clinic (2026), for example, lists $20 to $80 a session on a sliding scale and sees couples.
- Tonight: a self-guided pause. Calls and intake forms take days. For the argument that happens before your first appointment, a free tool like UnFight gives you a pause and clearer words.
Couples counseling routes compared, method by method
Six ways to get a counselor in the room without paying full private rates. Costs are from each organisation's own page, checked Updated November 2026.
| Route | Cost | Who you see | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employer EAP | Free | Licensed counselor, short-term | Only if a job offers it; limited sessions, then referral |
| University MFT clinic | Sliding scale, e.g. $20 to $80 (MSU) | Graduate therapist, supervised by licensed clinicians | Academic calendar; therapist may change |
| Community health center | Fees by income and family size | Clinic behavioral health staff | Couples sessions vary by clinic; ask |
| Open Path Collective | US$40 to $80 per couples session + one-time fee | Licensed private therapist at a reduced rate | Household income under $100,000; uninsured or underinsured |
| 211 | Free call | A referral specialist, not a counselor | Gives you names, not sessions |
| Self-guided app | Free tier | Nobody: it is a tool | Not therapy; no diagnosis |

How to find each one near you
- EAP. Search your benefits site or ask HR for "Employee Assistance Program". It is confidential; your manager is not told.
- University clinic. Open the COAMFTE directory of accredited programs, pick programs near you, then search "[university name] couple and family therapy clinic".
- Health center. Health centers "serve everyone, even if they cannot pay" and adjust fees by income, says HRSA (2026). Use the Find a Health Center locator and ask about couples sessions when you call.
- Open Path. Check eligibility on the Open Path Collective FAQ (2026), then filter therapists by couples work and distance.
- 211. Call 211 or use 211.org, run by United Way and ask for low-cost couples or family counseling in your county.
Ask every route the same question: do you see couples together, and what does one session cost us?
Honest limits of this page
- Prices change. We list what each organisation published when we checked; call before you count on it.
- We have not reviewed individual clinics or therapists, and the finder ranks routes, not people.
- The list is US-focused. Outside the US, ask your GP or local health service about relationship support.
- Free routes often have waiting lists. Plan for a gap of days or weeks.
Who this is not for
If you are afraid of your partner, couples counseling is not the right first step. Talk privately with an advocate at the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233). In danger right now, call 911 or your local emergency number.
If there is a crisis tonight, such as thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988 in the US. None of the routes above, and no app, is an emergency service.
If you can afford a private therapist who specialises in couples, that is still the most direct route. Ask about their training and approach on the first call.
How UnFight fits between sessions, in 3 steps
- Pause. When it heats up, open UnFight and pick Calm the Moment or Take a Break: 5, 20 or 30 minutes, custom, or no timer. Free and unlimited.
- Find your words. Say It Right covers nine situations, from needing a break to raising a concern, and drafts a Brief, Gentle or Direct version you can edit or throw away.
- Bring it to the session. The RESET Method (Regulate, Explain, State, Establish, Track) ends with one clear next step. Free includes one guided session a week; Premium makes them unlimited.
We built UnFight for the hours between appointments, not instead of them. One design decision: your writing stays on your iPhone, with no account and no analytics SDKs, so nothing you draft at 11 p.m. ends up on our servers.
Free vs Premium: Calm Down, the break timer, safety resources, Say It Right (Brief, Gentle, Direct), saved history and one guided session a week are free. Premium (monthly, annual or lifetime) adds unlimited RESET and Partner sessions, the Detailed style and unlimited agreements.

Low-cost couples counseling: questions people ask
Is there really free couples counseling?
Sometimes. An employer's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers free, confidential short-term counseling, and family problems are among the issues EAPs handle. Some university training clinics and community programs charge very little. Fully free, open-ended couples therapy is rare, so most couples end up with a mix of free sessions and sliding-scale fees.
How much does sliding-scale couples therapy cost?
It depends on the clinic and your income. As two real examples: Michigan State University's Couple and Family Therapy Clinic lists $20 to $80 a session, and Open Path Collective lists US$40 to $80 per couples or family session plus a one-time membership fee, for households under $100,000 a year.
Are student therapists any good?
At accredited training clinics, graduate student therapists see clients under the supervision of fully licensed clinicians. You may get more time and more careful preparation, with the trade-off that your therapist can change when the academic year ends. Ask the clinic how supervision and handovers work.
Does insurance cover couples counseling?
Plans differ. Call the number on your insurance card and ask two direct questions: are couples or family sessions covered, and which in-network therapists see couples? Write down the answers and the name of the person you spoke to.
What if my partner won't go?
You can still go alone. Most of the routes on this page also see individuals, and one person changing how they pause and speak can change the pattern. UnFight works for one person on one phone; Partner Mode is optional.
Is couples counseling safe if my partner scares me?
If you are afraid of your partner, couples counseling is not the right first step. Talk privately with an advocate at the National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org, 1-800-799-7233). In danger right now, call 911 or your local emergency number.
Can an app replace a counselor?
No. UnFight is a self-guided communication tool for the moment an argument heats up and for the week between sessions. It is not therapy, it does not diagnose anyone, and it does not score your relationship.
