What are Open When letters to yourself, and how do you start?
Open When letters to yourself are short sealed letters, each labelled for a moment such as "open when you can't sleep", that you write on a good day and open only when that moment arrives. Start with the one moment that keeps coming back, write ten minutes, seal it, and do one more each day for a week.
Most "open when" lists online are written for partners and long-distance friends. Writing them to yourself works differently: you know exactly which moments return, and you know what you will need to hear.
On a good day you know what a bad day needs to hear. Write it down then.
The 7-day Open When letter plan
One letter a day, about ten minutes each. Skip a day and carry on; nothing resets.
- Day 1Open when you can't sleep
Write to the 2 a.m. version of you. What is true about tomorrow that 2 a.m. forgets? Keep it short; tired eyes read short.
- Day 2Open when you're doubting yourself
List three things you have already done that once felt impossible. Then one line: "You've been here before."
- Day 3Open when you're waiting on news
Write what you will do in the next hour, whatever the news is. Waiting is easier with a plan for the next small step.
- Day 4Open when something finally went right
Tell future you to stop and notice it. Ask them to write down who helped, before it blurs.
- Day 5Open when you're starting over
Name what you are taking with you: a skill, a friend, a lesson. Starting over is rarely starting from zero.
- Day 6Open when you need a push
Be direct. One task, one deadline, one reason it matters. Encouragement can be firm.
- Day 7Open when you've forgotten why
Write why you began the thing you care about most right now. In a year, this letter may be the only record.

How it works in Dear You, in 3 steps
- Open the shelf. The Moments tab holds sealed envelopes for real moments: can't sleep, doubting yourself, waiting on news, starting over, something finally went right.
- Seal your own. Tap "Seal your own", write the moment and the letter in your own words, and it joins the shelf.
- Open it when the moment comes. Then write back, privately, under the letter. Over time those replies become a conversation with yourself.
Who this challenge is not for
If you want to send letters to someone else, paper or a shared document is the better route; Dear You is private and has no sharing between people.
If you are in a crisis right now, a letter can wait. In the US, call or text 988. Dear You is a reflection and writing app, not a medical or mental-health service.
If you prefer a date-based time capsule, a future-self letter suits you better than Open When. Dear You has those too, sealed from a week to five years.
Proof: an annotated tour of the Open When shelf

- Seal your own. Write the letter only you could write, then seal it until it's needed.
- Real moments. Can't sleep, doubting yourself, waiting on news. Labels you would actually reach for.
- Some are Plus. Two Open When letters are free; the full shelf is part of Dear You Plus. The Plus tag shows which.
- One design decision: a sealed letter stays sealed until you choose to open it, so the moment still feels like opening something.

Open When letter questions
What are Open When letters to yourself?
They are sealed letters you write now, each labelled for a specific moment, like "open when you can't sleep" or "open when you're doubting yourself". Instead of opening on a date, you open one when that moment actually arrives.
How many Open When letters should I write?
Start with five to seven for the moments you know come back. More is not better if you never reread them. Our 7-day plan gives you one a day so none feels rushed.
How long should an Open When letter be?
Short. A page at most, often a paragraph. You will usually open it on a hard day, and a hard day reads short letters.
What is the difference between an Open When letter and a letter to your future self?
A future-self letter opens on a date you choose, like a time capsule. An Open When letter opens at a moment, whenever it comes. Dear You does both: future letters seal for a week up to five years, and the Open When shelf waits for the moment.
Should I write Open When letters on paper or in an app?
Paper is lovely and costs nothing, but it is easy to lose and hard to reach at 2 a.m. away from home. An app keeps them on your phone. Many people do both: paper for one or two keepsakes, the phone for the rest.
Is Dear You free?
Your first daily letter, two Open When letters, one future letter waiting at a time, write-back notes, search, Face ID lock, PDF export and backup are free. Dear You Plus (annual or monthly) adds the full Open When shelf, unlimited future letters, a fresh matched letter every day, the Sunday letter and all seven Journeys.
Start on your iPhone. Seal the first one tonight.
